Postdoctoral fellow - Microbial genomics : New York, United States
Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) such as MRSA and C. difficile are a serious, potentially fatal, threat to patients across the world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate HAIs account for roughly 1.7 million infections every year in the United States and cause or contribute to 99,000 deaths annually with a greater burden on immunocompromised patients. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on a project aimed at understanding the molecular basis of infectious disease evolution and transmission, delineating host-pathogen interactions, and identifying novel pathogens.
The candidate will work within an integrated, multidisciplinary team of clinicians, microbiologists, and computational scientists at the Institute for Genomics and Multiscale Biology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. They will use the latest next-generation sequencing technologies to analyze complete pathogen genomes and identify variants and structural changes that affect virulence and resistance to antibiotics. Additionally, using data from emergent technologies they will help develop novel algorithms and methods to improve existing genome assembly and analysis pipelines. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in microbiology or bioinformatics with a strong background in microbial genome analysis and excellent quantitative skills. The successful applicant will have strong training in genomic analysis and data mining and the ability to work in a highly collaborative team setting. Previous experience with de novo genome assembly would be an asset.
Specific qualifications include:
• Experience in one or more of the following areas:
o Microbial genome annotation and phylogenetic analysis
o Identification of genetic variants in whole-genome sequencing data
o Statistical analysis (e.g., using R, Matlab)
o Programming (e.g., python, C/C++, or Java)
• Ability to complete tasks efficiently and independently
• Strong work ethic and attention to detail
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work in a collaborative setting
